Ghost Ship Gayundah

Woody Point, QLD

photographer: Russell Stewart

The remains of the HMAS Gayundah, on the shores of Woody Point near Redcliffe.

Launched 13 May 1884 as a Gunboat, the Gayundah was a proud 120 feet in length and had a displacement of 360 tons.  After a several successful roles as a maritime defence vessel, she served a simple life as a sand and gravel barge on the Brisbane River.

Once her working days had come to an end, she was stripped of all valuables and beached on the foreshore of  Woody Point to act as a breakwater.

From here she can watch over the bay upon which she once steamed. Come nightfall, the lights of the Port Of Brisbane and the trails of aircraft landing at Brisbane Airport are her's to enjoy. - Russell
