Tussocks & Schist

Bannockburn Region, Central Otago, New Zealand

photographer: Bernie Zajac

Overseas Travel Series

Amid the distinctive and spectacular landscape, tussock grasslands and striking rocky schist formations dominate the scenery of the Carrick Range and Nevis Valley within the Bannockburn area. This barren environment suffers through some of the hottest dry summers and coldest dry winters that New Zealand delivers, in fact being smack-bang in the middle of some of New Zealand's driest areas - so it's little wonder it appears so strange and exotic, especially when enveloped in golden sunset light. Yet if you were to snap on a pair of wings and soar over that far mountain range (the Tapuae-o-Uenuku/Hector Mountains) you'd be gifted with amazing views of the southern reaches of Lake Wakatipu.

We'd spent the day exploring the reaches of the valley in our bucket-o-shit 4wd and finally settled on shooting the sunset from one of the highest points along the Nevis Road, providing stunning views of the road snaking its way down into the valley deep below. In true Bernie form I made sure to find and scale to the top of one of those rocky outcrops giving me an even better view than Russ and Tim :)

Cheers, Bernie
