Who doesn't love the French Alps!! We were lucky enough to spend six weeks travelling through Poland, Italy, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and a tiny bit of France (Chamonix). Sadly, no where near enough time within these areas - there's simply an unthinkable amount of beautiful country and terrain to be seen.
This particular short-lived French experience came later through the trip, fuelled by my father wanting to show me where he'd spent many of his mountaineering years. A trip up to Aiguille du Midi (3,842m) is a must for anyone considering a visit this part of Europe.
The cable car to the summit, the Téléphérique de l'Aiguille du Midi, is an exquisite experience -- reaching the summit you'll be left breathless, quite literally, as this altitude is enough to start thinning out oxygen levels and in those unlucky enough, bring on very mild altitude sickness. The lift itself and held the title of the world's highest cable car for about two decades. It still holds the record as the highest vertical ascent cable car in the world, from 1,035 m to 3,842 m.
