Burrungkuy Storm

Kakadu, NT.

photographer: Russell Stewart

I had the opportunity to visit Kakadu early in 2018.  Unfortunately the wet season waters were yet to recede and access was restricted to most areas. Not being one to flout the rules, especially when Kakadu+Landscape Photographer+Water = Croc Soup, I decided that the high ground views were the safer option.

This shot of Nourlangie Rock (Burrungkuy) was taken from the Nawurlandja Lookout and between these two locations you can see the trees lining the banks of the Anbangbang Billabong. It is from the billabong's walk that I really wanted to shoot, as it offers wonderful reflected views of Burrungkuy. But as I mentioned I didn't want to be on the dinner menu that day.

...and the storm? you ask.  Well that's just another typical day in the NT and being surrounded by storms is the quite the norm during the "Knock 'em down" season. However I must admit that I wasn't prepared for the supercell that this front quickly became and the dry microburst that it sent hurtling my way. I tried to keep shooting during this burst, but it was all I could do just to retain my footing, let alone keep a camera still for exposures. - Cheers, Russell.
